Description
Born 1962, married, two children, studied Political Science (major), Public Law and History in Bonn/Germany and Canberra/Australia. He worked for different German youth and social welfare organisations and the German Red Cross.
Joined the European Commission in 1995, initially in DG V (Employment and Social Affairs), then in DG Health and Food Safety, Public Health Directorate. He held several Head of Unit positions since 2005: Health Determinants, Programme Management and Diseases and Crisis Management and Preparedness in Health.
Since January 2017 in DG Energy – Deputy Director and Head of Unit, Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety, with responsibility for relevant legislation (Basic Safety Standards, Nuclear Safety Directive, Euratom Drinking Water Directive), monitoring radioactivity in the environment, emergency preparedness and response, the SAMIRA initiative on medical applications, and health protection.
Director General of the Euratom Supply Agency (ESA) from 1 May 2024. ESA’s key role is to ensure a secure supply of nuclear materials—by exercising its legal power, delivering various market analyses, and working closely with EU Member States and industry partners.
From 1 January 2026, Acting Deputy Director General, DG Energy, with responsibility for the coordination of Euratom policies.
