This presentation will explore the role of simulation in the education and preparation of future healthcare professionals, with a particular focus on medical imaging. It will discuss how simulation can help bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and clinical practice, allowing learners to develop both technical and non-technical skills in a safe and controlled environment. Starting from a simple and unexpected example of simulation, the presentation will introduce how simulation has evolved in healthcare — from early patient simulators and mannequins to increasingly sophisticated digital and immersive technologies. Different approaches, including physical models, simulated patients, team-based simulation, and virtual reality, will be illustrated through examples drawn from medical imaging and healthcare practice. The presentation will consider the simulation-based learning process, including preparation and briefing, the simulation experience, and debriefing and reflection. Through practical examples and clinical scenarios, it will demonstrate how simulation can reproduce not only technical procedures, but also the complexity of communication, teamwork, decision-making, and unexpected clinical situations. It will highlight how emerging technologies are creating increasingly immersive and realistic opportunities for learners to practise safely, make mistakes, receive feedback, reflect, and improve before encountering similar situations in clinical practice. Finally, the presentation will consider how simulation can complement clinical education and contribute to the development of healthcare professionals who are better prepared to work safely and effectively in an increasingly complex and technology-driven healthcare environment.
